Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 12,500 "Future Shock" suspension forks designed for mountain bikes. These forks were sold nationwide from September 1991 to November 1993 as accessories or original equipment for 1992 "Stumpjumper FS" model mountain bikes and 1992 "S-Works M2" framesets. The forks were sold for about $315 each by authorized Specialized bicycle retailers, accessory dealers, and Bike Nashbar.

The recall is due to reports of accidents where the stanchion tubes (upper fork legs) separated from the fork crown while in use. This separation was caused by insufficient tightening of the fork crown bolts and/or oil residue in the joint. Specialized has received at least 15 reports of accidents resulting in personal injuries, including three reported serious injuries.

Consumers should immediately stop using bikes equipped with these 1992 Future Shock suspension forks. They should bring the bikes to any authorized Specialized bicycle retailer for a free inspection and repair. Retailers will install safety caps, degrease the joints, and correctly retighten the fork crown bolts. Consumers can distinguish the recalled 1992 models from later, non-recalled models because in the 1992 models, the stanchion tubes do not pass through the fork crown.
