Plain-English summary
Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. is recalling approximately 2,500 1998 model year Specialized bicycles in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The affected models include the Stumpjumper M2, Stumpjumper M2 Comp, Stumpjumper M2 Pro, S-Works M2, Ground Control FSR Elite, Ground Control FSR Pro, and Ground Control FSR Limited. These bicycles were sold nationwide by Specialized Bicycle-authorized dealers from January 1998 through May 1998 for prices ranging from $500 to $3,000.
The recall is necessary because the bicycle chains were produced using a malfunctioning chain assembly tool. This defect can cause the chains to break during use, which may result in a loss of control and cause the rider to fall and be injured. Specialized has received 10 reports of chains breaking, but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers with affected bicycles should take them to the store where they were purchased for a free chain replacement. For additional information, consumers can call Specialized at (800) 214-1467 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PDT, Monday through Friday.
