Specialized Recalls 2002 Enduro Bicycles Due to Rear Seatstay Breakage Risk
Specialized Bicycle Components is recalling about 2,200 2002 Enduro-brand bicycles because the rear seatstays can break, potentially causing a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (seatstay breakage) that can cause loss of control and crashes, which fits the 'High' severity criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. is recalling about 2,200 model year 2002 Enduro-brand bicycles. The recall involves the Enduro Pro FSR (silver), Enduro Expert FSR (black), Enduro Comp FSR (yellow), and Enduro FSR (blue). The model name is located on the top tube and the brand name is on the down tube.
The rear seatstays, which are the tubes behind the seat connecting the rear axle to the rear shock, can break. This failure can cause the rider to lose control and crash. Specialized has received 39 reports of the seatstays breaking on these bicycles, but no injuries have been reported.
These bicycles were sold by authorized Specialized dealers nationwide from September 2001 through February 2002 for between $1,650 and $2,750. Consumers should stop riding these bicycles immediately and return them to their local Specialized dealer for a new rear seatstay, which will be installed at no charge. For more information, call Specialized at (800) 214-1468 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.
