Specialized Recalls Bicycles with Steerer Tube Collars Due to Fall Hazards

Specialized is recalling about 63,000 bicycles because the steerer tube collar can crack, causing sudden loss of steering control and posing fall and injury hazards.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (loss of steering control) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc. is recalling select Specialized Roubaix, Ruby, Diverge, and Sirrus bicycles equipped with a Future Shock from the 2017 through 2019 model years. The recall involves approximately 63,000 units sold nationwide at authorized Specialized Retailers between July 2016 and January 2019 for prices ranging from $1,650 to $11,500. The affected models include S-works, Pro, Expert, Comp, Elite, E5 Comp, Sport, and Base versions, identifiable by an S-works or Specialized decal on the downtube.

The recall is due to a hazard where the bicycle's steerer tube collar can crack if exposed to corrosion. This cracking can result in a sudden loss of steering control, posing fall and injury hazards to the rider. The company has received two reports of cracking in the steerer tube collar, but no injuries have been reported.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and contact an authorized Specialized Retailer for a free repair of the steerer tube collar. For more information, consumers can contact Specialized Bicycle Components toll-free at 877-808-8154 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, email [email protected], or visit www.specialized.com and click on “Safety Notices.”
