Plain-English summary
Designers Edge, Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 2,000 "Mighty Lite" halogen clamp lights. These yellow clamp lights, featuring a black hook and handle, were sold at Northern California Yardbirds stores and 182 Sears stores nationwide between July and August 1993. The retail price was $19.99.
The recall addresses a potential shock hazard. When used without the hook, the lamp can rotate 180 degrees to a backward position, causing tension on the wires inside the switch junction box. This tension can cause the wires to chafe and short circuit, energizing the metal components with 120 volts of electricity. Designers Edge identified the issue after a Sears store in El Paso reported electrical leakage from a display lamp where the hook had been removed.
Consumers who purchased these lights should immediately stop using them. Those who bought the lights from Sears should return them for a full refund. Consumers who purchased the lights from Northern California Yardbirds stores should check the lamp cord for a date code; if no date code is marked, they should return the light for a full refund or replacement. Lamps marked with a date code are not affected. Consumers should not attempt to repair the lights themselves.
