What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (electric shock) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria in the rubric.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling Builders Square fluorescent "Wall Bracket Lights" (SKU 9300117) and Pay-N-Pak "Deck Lite Fixtures" (models 302048 and 302049). The recall involves 9,300 Builders Square units and an unknown number of Pay-N-Pak units. These outdoor light fixtures were sold nationwide from July 1991 through March 1992 for $14.97 each.
The recalled light fixtures do not have a weatherproof ballast and are not grounded. Rainwater could seep inside the fixture and short circuit the energized ballast terminals to the metal fixture, creating an electric shock hazard. No electric shock incidents have been reported to Builders Square or the CPSC.
Consumers should immediately discontinue use of both products and disconnect the power. Owners of Builders Square fixtures should return them to any Builders Square store for a full refund. Owners of Pay-N-Pak fixtures should disconnect and discard them, as Pay-N-Pak, Inc. is out of business.
