Plain-English summary
Lutron Electronics Co. Inc. is recalling approximately 28,000 Tu-Wire® ballasts used with dimmable compact fluorescent lights. These ballasts were included with light fixtures sold under numerous brand names by light fixture manufacturers, electrical distributors, and electrical contractors nationwide from July 1998 through May 2006 for about $120. The ballasts are not visible once installed and are used to dim compact fluorescent lighting fixtures with a 120 VAC application.
The recall is due to a risk of electric shock. If the ballasts are not properly grounded in accordance with the National Electrical Code, they can present a shock hazard to persons who come in contact with the ballast or the light fixture, such as when changing a fluorescent lamp bulb. No injuries have been reported. This recall does not involve light fixtures containing incandescent or halogen lamps, or fixtures with screw-in compact fluorescent lamps or straight tube (linear) fluorescent lamps.
Consumers should not touch these fixtures, as they could pose a shock hazard. Consumers should contact Lutron Electronics to arrange for a free replacement of the recalled ballasts. For more information, consumers can contact Lutron Electronics toll-free at (866) 793-4270 or visit www.lutron.com.
