Plain-English summary
Norelco Consumer Products Company is voluntarily replacing certain Norelco Wrinkle Remover Fabric Steamers, Model TS-60, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall affects units distributed to retailers after June 15, 1991, and sold nationwide for approximately $17.00 to $22.00 each. Norelco estimates that 56,880 steamers were distributed in blister packaging, which is the specific packaging type associated with the potential defect.
The problem involves the insulation on the steamer's cord, which may have been damaged during the packaging process. This damage can leave a small amount of wiring exposed, presenting a possible electric shock hazard. Norelco believes that only steamers sold in blister packaging, rather than those sold in boxes, may have defective cords.
Consumers should check the date code stamped on the metal blade of the plug. If the first three digits of the four-digit number are between 241 and 281, consumers should examine the cord for tears exposing the wiring. If no tears are present, the steamer is safe to use. If tears are present, consumers should stop using the steamer immediately and return it to the retailer for a free replacement or a full refund. Units can also be mailed to Norelco Consumer Products Company at 440 N. Medinah, Roselle, IL 60172, via UPS or insured parcel post, with postage costs refunded. For more information, consumers can call 1-800-253-8000.
