Plain-English summary
Century Products Company is voluntarily recalling its 1991 model wind-up infant swings equipped with a "Whisper-Wind" motor in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall covers approximately 181,000 units manufactured in 1991 and sold nationwide for between $30 and $80. The affected models are 12-319, 12-329, 12-344, 12-345, and 12-349, and they bear manufacturing date codes 9101 through 9112 on a white label located on the bottom of the swing seat.
The recall is being issued because Century Products received 31 reports of consumer injuries involving these swings. Most injuries occurred when consumers attempted to open the motor housing or repair swings that had stopped working. If the plastic cover over the swing motor is removed, the powerful, coiled wind-up spring unwinds rapidly and forcefully, which may cause serious injury. Reported injuries include puncture wounds and lacerations that required immediate medical treatment.
The replacement program for these units is no longer available. Century Products and the CPSC warn consumers not to try to disassemble the swing or remove the motor housing. Consumers should discard or destroy the product. More information is available by calling the company's customer service number at 800-345-4109.
