The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall of Simoniz Quick Gloss, an aerosol automotive appearance product. The recall is necessary because the product's aerosol metal container may rupture. This failure could cause the metal dome of the container to separate under pressure, resulting in lacerations to the user or bystanders.

Simoniz, based in Danbury, CT, was informed of the hazard after consumers reported three incidents of can failure. In these cases, the aerosol containers apparently corroded, leading to a build-up in pressure and subsequent rupture. Simoniz is not aware of any injuries associated with these incidents. Approximately 200,000 cans were distributed nationally for about $4.00 at retail since February 1989.

Consumers should spray the contents of the aerosol cans into a waste container away from any open flame and immediately dispose of the containers as they normally would with trash. As with any aerosol container, these cans should not be punctured or disposed of in an incinerator or trash compactor. For a full refund, consumers should call Simoniz toll-free at 1-800-243-6400 and provide the product code number on the bottom of the can and the purchase price.
