Jakks Pacific Recalls Smatter Spray Foam Cans Due to Breakage Risk
Jakks Pacific is recalling approximately 296,000 cans of Smatter spray foam because the pressurized containers can break apart in hot vehicles, posing an injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the pressurized container can break apart and cause injury. While a minor injury to a child and property damage (cracked windshields) were reported, there are no reports of serious injury or death, and the hazard is specific to leaving the product in a hot vehicle.
Plain-English summary
Jakks Pacific Inc. is recalling approximately 296,000 cans of "Smatter" spray foam. The recall involves early production units with date codes "0492PT" to "0952PT" stamped on the bottom of the can. The product is an aerosol that sprays soft foam and is sold in three varieties: "Original Smatter," "Spit Smatter," and "Fatter Smatter." The cans feature "SMATTER" in large print and "Nickelodeon™" on the orange handle.
The recall was issued because the pressurized cans can forcefully break apart if left in a hot automobile, which can cause injury to nearby consumers. Jakks Pacific has received eight reports of the aerosol container breaking apart. In one instance, a child reportedly suffered a minor bump on the head after a can broke apart in a hot car. In two other cases, car windshields were cracked.
The recalled products were sold nationwide at discount department and toy stores from February 2002 through June 5, 2002, for about $10. Consumers should immediately take the recalled "Smatter" away from children and contact Jakks Pacific, Inc. at (800) 554-5516 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit www.jakkspacific.com for information on receiving a free replacement product.
