Plain-English summary

Baby Line Furniture Company, a division of Spalding & Evenflo Companies, Inc., is conducting a voluntary replacement program for slotted mattress support hangers and plastic brackets used in Questor "Baby Line" cribs. These components were manufactured between 1970 and 1982. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identified these parts as potential suffocation hazards because they can unhook or break, causing the mattress to tilt and trap a child.

The CPSC has received reports of two deaths and 31 other incidents where the hangers became unhooked or the brackets broke or bent. In 19 of these 33 incidents, including the two fatalities, the child became entrapped between the mattress and the crib structure. The hangers may unhook when the crib is moved, the bed is made, or a child jumps in the crib. More than 900,000 of these cribs were manufactured and sold in various styles and finishes.

Owners of these cribs, including those in storage, should call the manufacturer toll-free to obtain replacement kits for the slotted hangers and plastic brackets. The phone number is 800-543-8954 outside Ohio and 800-762-8926 in Ohio. Owners can also write to Baby Line Furniture Co. in Los Angeles, California. Those who have previously used or reassembled the cribs are urged to check them frequently for stability and loose parts.
