Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Simmons Juvenile Products announced a recall of more than 68,600 Little Folks cribs. The recall addresses a defect in the bracket hooks used to position the mattress height. These hooks can break, causing the mattress to collapse. If the mattress drops, babies can become trapped and suffocate.
Simmons received more than 800 reports of bracket hooks breaking in the four months prior to the recall announcement. In one reported incident, a 6-month-old hit his chin on the side rail when the mattress dropped. The affected cribs were sold nationwide from January 1998 through December 2000 at discount, mass merchandise, juvenile product, and department stores, including Sears, for between $200 and $600.
The manufacturer, Simmons Juvenile Products, is no longer in business, and a repair remedy is no longer available. Consumers are instructed to discard the product and not donate or resell it. Consumers can contact the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054) for assistance identifying if their crib is recalled.
