Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning regarding more than 1,000 "Stralighter" non-full size baby cribs manufactured by Contemporary Times, Inc. between 1975 and 1978. These plastic cribs feature hinged fold-down side rails that, when the top half is folded down, create a picket fence configuration in the lower half. This design allows a baby's neck to become entrapped in the slats.
A nine-month-old infant died from asphyxiation after her neck became entrapped in the crib slats. Additionally, the side rail in its lowest position is below the top of the mattress in its highest position, creating a risk that a baby could fall out of the crib and sustain injury.
Consumers are advised to immediately discontinue the use of these cribs. There is no adequate or feasible fix for the entrapment hazard, and consumers should not attempt to repair the cribs as this may create additional hazards. Contemporary Times, Inc. is insolvent and undergoing federal bankruptcy proceedings, and the company has refused to recall or repurchase the units. The cribs were sold nationwide at retail for approximately $200.00.
