What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a baby crib that resulted in two reported incidents of infants being entrapped and strangled, meeting the criteria for significant injury reports.
Plain-English summary
Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary notification program for approximately 1,654 purchasers of Bassett baby cribs. The affected models, 5028 and 5127, were produced with a cut-out design in the headboards and footboards. The CPSC determined that infants could become entrapped and strangled while standing in these cribs, citing two investigated reports of such incidents.
The cribs were sold nationwide from December 1975 to mid-October 1977 for approximately $100 each. Specific model numbers involved are 5028-505, 5028-510, 5127-505, and 5127-510. Bassett stopped manufacturing these models after the first incident and has removed the cut-out design from its product line.
Consumers with unmodified cribs should immediately contact the store where purchased to arrange for free installation of a modification kit that closes the openings. If that is not possible, consumers should contact the nearest Bassett retailer or call Bassett collect at area code 703/629-7511, ext. 340. Caution should be exercised in using these cribs until the modification kit is installed.
