Bassett estimates that approximately 4,700 Mandalay cribs and 400 Candlelite cribs may not have been modified to eliminate the hazard. The company has reported that these cribs have been associated with six infant deaths since 1977.

Consumers who own one of these cribs that has not yet been modified should immediately contact Bassett to obtain a free repair kit or instructions for eliminating the hazard. Bassett is also sending hazard notifications by direct mail to parents of infants and young children and running advertisements in magazines to warn consumers. Bassett has agreed to pay a $175,000 civil penalty and undertake an extensive remedial action program.
