Continental Gourmet Corp. is recalling approximately 22,000 Pronto Caffe EM-l Espresso/Cappuccino Beverage Makers manufactured through May 1980. The recall was initiated in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) due to a defect in the coffee basket attachment.
The coffee basket in these units may be difficult to secure to the water reservoir. If the basket is not properly secured, steam pressure buildup could cause it to dislodge and strike the glass carafe positioned below. This impact can result in flying glass and hot liquid. CPSC has received reports of eleven incidents of apparent basket detachment, four of which involved minor injuries consisting of cuts and burns. Two additional incidents reported directly to the company allegedly resulted in minor injuries.
Affected units can be identified by specific date codes on the bottom of the appliance, where the first number indicates the month and the second indicates the year. The codes are: 11 9, 11 79, 12 9, 12 79, 1 8, 1 80, 2 8, 2 80, 3 8, 3 80, 4 8, 4 80, 5 8, or 5 80. Consumers should refrain from using the appliance and contact Continental Gourmet Corp. to obtain a replacement "universal" coffee basket and an unbreakable plastic carafe.
