Plain-English summary
Krups North America Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 1,472,000 model number 963 Espresso/Cappuccino Machines. These machines were distributed to retail stores nationwide from 1985 through 1992, though some may still be on sale. The recall addresses a design issue where the letters "min" on the filter holder locking mechanism are misinterpreted as referring to coffee strength rather than the holder's position.
If the filter holder is set far to the left of "min," steam pressure can build up with enough force to cause the holder to fly out of the machine. This can occur if the holder is moved while the machine is operating. When the holder falls, it can strike the glass carafe, causing it to shatter. To date, Krups has received 57 reports of carafes shattering, resulting in injuries to 15 people. Flying pieces of metal, glass, plastic, coffee grinds, and hot coffee can cause serious cuts or burns to nearby individuals.
Consumers should rotate the filter holder to the "max" position and call Krups at (800) 526-5377 to receive a sticker to cover the "min max" position and revised operating instructions. Krups is also offering a $5 rebate for any Krups products to consumers who request these materials. Machines manufactured after 1992 that are marked "Lock" are not involved in this recall.
