Nevco Electric Ceramic Hot Pots Recalled for Shock Hazard

Nevco is recalling 217,000 electric ceramic hot pots because a damaged heating coil could cause severe electrical shock if the user stirs the liquid with a metal object.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (electrical shock) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for potential severe harm without confirmed incidents.

Plain-English summary

Nevco, in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is voluntarily recalling 217,000 electric ceramic hot pots. These pots, intended for heating up to 4 cups of liquid, were sold nationwide under the Nevco name since January 1975. They retail for between $2.99 and $4.99 and are marked "120V-350W JAPAN" on the bottom.

The recall is due to a potential shock hazard. If the heating coil at the bottom of the pot is heated while not immersed in liquid, the coil becomes damaged. If a grounded user subsequently stirs the liquid in the pot using a metal article, they could receive a potentially severe electrical shock.

Consumers should stop using the hot pots immediately. Those who purchased the pot from a dealer or Nevco should return the unit to Nevco at Page & Schuyler Avenues, Lyndhurst, N.J. 07071, with a statement of where it was purchased and the purchase price for a refund including postage. Consumers who do not have the box or are unsure if their pot is a Nevco model should contact their dealer or Nevco to confirm eligibility. If the pot is not a Nevco brand but matches the description, consumers are urged to discontinue use and notify the CPSC of the importer or distributor's name.
