Chemboys DIYChemicals Potassium and Sodium Hydroxide Lacks Child-Resistant Packaging

Chemboys is recalling DIYChemicals potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide products because the packaging is not child-resistant and labels lack mandatory hazard information. The products pose a risk of chemical burns and eye irritation to children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recalled products contain caustic substances (potassium and sodium hydroxide) that pose a risk of significant chemical burns and eye irritation, particularly to children. Although no injuries have been reported, the hazard is direct and high-risk; the source explicitly states the packaging failure creates a risk of harm. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported warrant a score of 3 (High).

Plain-English summary

Chemboys LLC of Liberty, Texas is recalling DIYChemicals potassium hydroxide (KOH) flakes and sodium hydroxide (also called lye or caustic soda) products. These products, sold in sizes from 200 grams to 10 pounds, were distributed online through DIYChemicals.com, Amazon.com, and eBay.com from May 2021 to March 2023.

The recalled products fail to meet the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) requirement for child-resistant packaging. Additionally, the product labels violate the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) by not including mandatory hazard information. Because the packaging is not child-resistant, potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide pose a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes if accessed by children.

No injuries have been reported to date. Consumers should immediately store the recalled products in a safe location out of sight and reach of children. Chemboys is contacting all known purchasers directly and offering free replacement child-resistant packaging and new labels. Consumers can contact Chemboys toll-free at 888-246-2697 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET), email [email protected], or visit https://diychemicals.com/recall_naohkoh/ or www.diychemicals.com and click on "recall information" for more details.
