AirWick Fresh New Day Aerosol Air Fresheners Recalled for Rupture and Laceration Risk
Reckitt is recalling about 67,000 AirWick Fresh New Day aerosol air fresheners in Fresh Linen and Fresh Waters scents due to a missing corrosion inhibitor in one batch that can cause cans to rupture or leak. No injuries have been reported.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product where rupture and laceration hazards are identified, and the source text explicitly states no injuries have been reported. Under the rubric, this qualifies as High (score 3): "risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported."
Plain-English summary
Reckitt is recalling AirWick Fresh New Day aerosol air fresheners in 8-ounce cans in Fresh Linen (blue and white can) and Fresh Waters (green and white can) scents. The affected batch (code B22077-NJ with date code 18/03/22) is missing a corrosion inhibitor, which can cause the metal can to corrode and rupture.
The hazard poses two risks. If the can ruptures, it can expel contents and cause injury or lacerations. If the container corrodes and leaks, the contents can cause skin and eye irritation upon contact. The firm has received five incident reports: two of cans leaking, two of cans rupturing, and one of both leaking and rupturing. No injuries have been reported.
The recalled air fresheners were sold nationwide at grocery, mass merchandiser, hardware, home improvement, drug, and other stores—including Dollar Tree, True Value, and Cumberland Farms—between March 2022 and September 2022 for approximately $1.25 each. About 67,000 units are affected.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled air fresheners, wrap them in several layers of paper, and dispose of them in accordance with state and local requirements. They should use caution to avoid skin and eye contact if a can appears to be leaking. Reckitt is offering a free replacement voucher. To receive one, consumers should contact Reckitt at 800-228-4722 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. ET) or visit www.airwick.us/Voluntary-Recall or www.airwick.us and click "Product Recall" to submit a photo of the recalled can with their contact information and written confirmation of disposal.
