Pool and Spa Drain Covers Recalled for Entrapment Hazard

Chyir Myd pool and spa drain covers do not meet federal entrapment-protection standards and pose a hazard to swimmers. About 300 units were sold on Amazon from September 2021 through June 2022.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The drain covers violate a federal safety standard (VGBA) designed to prevent a specific harm—entrapment—to a defined at-risk population (swimmers and bathers). Although no illnesses or injuries have been reported, the hazard addresses a serious risk of harm in a high-risk context, meeting the High severity threshold.

Plain-English summary

Chyir Myd Co. Ltd is recalling replacement round swimming pool main drain covers sold exclusively on Amazon.com from September 2021 through June 2022. The recalled drain covers are white, made of ABS plastic, approximately 7.28 inches in diameter at the top grate and 8.11 inches at the bottom mounting plate, and marked "SP-1030" and "148 GPM" at the center.

The recalled drain covers do not conform to the entrapment protection standards of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA). This non-compliance creates an entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers. No injuries have been reported.

About 300 units were sold for approximately $12 each. Pool owners and operators should immediately stop using pools and spas with these drain covers. Consumers should remove the drain cover, submit a photo to [email protected] as proof of removal, and dispose of the cover after receiving a full refund. Chyir Myd is contacting all purchasers directly.
