Ceramic Pulleys for Cabrinha Switchblade and Drifter Kites Recalled for Injury Hazard

Adventure Sports is recalling about 1,950 ceramic pulleys used in Cabrinha Switchblade and Drifter kiteboarding kites because the pulleys can cause bridle line breakage, reducing steering and control and risking kiteboarder injury.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Although no injuries have been reported, the source text explicitly states the recalled ceramic pulleys pose an injury hazard by reducing kiteboarder control. This is a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High (score 3) criterion.

Plain-English summary

Adventure Sports Inc. of Dorel, Florida is recalling approximately 1,950 ceramic pulleys—with the marking "Cabrinha"—used in Cabrinha Switchblade and Drifter kites for kite surfing. The ceramic pulleys can cause the bridle line connection to break, which reduces performance in steering and control of the kite, causing the kiteboarder to lose control of the kite and posing an injury hazard.

The firm has received 30 reports of the ceramic pulley fraying the bridle line, though no injuries have been reported. The affected kites have model number 02 and serial numbers beginning with 61NI, 61NJ, 61NK, 61NL, 62NA, 62NB, 62NC, C11G, C11H, or C11K. Model and serial numbers appear on the outer box, hangtags, and trailing edge label. Kites without a green dot on the hangtag and outer shipping box are included in the recall.

The ceramic pulleys were sold individually for about $15, with bridle lines at $11, and as part of complete kites priced between $1,250 and $2,000. They were distributed through kite surfing stores including Kiteboarding Saint Petersburg and Best Pro Kiteboarding in Florida, Adventure Sports USA, and online at cabrinha.com and other websites from October 2021 through April 2022.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled kites and contact where they were purchased, an authorized dealer, or Adventure Sports for a free replacement kit with installation instructions. The firm is contacting all known purchasers directly. Consumers can call Adventure Sports at 800-399-5734 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.cabrinha.com and click Support then Recalls, or https://www.cabrinha.com/pages/recalls.
