Residential Elevators recalled for child entrapment hazard

Residential Elevators, Inc. is recalling about 31,000 home elevators sold since 1986 because young children can become trapped between the exterior and interior doors, risking serious injury or death.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The source reports one incident resulting in serious spinal injury to a child, and the hazard poses a direct risk of serious injury or death. Although no fatalities are documented, reported serious injury meets the rubric criterion for Severe (Class II with hospitalization reports or significant injury reports).

Plain-English summary

Residential Elevators, Inc., of Tallahassee, Florida, is recalling about 31,000 residential elevators sold nationwide directly to consumers and through authorized dealers from 1986 through July 2022. The recalled models include Easy Rider, Horizon Lift, Luxury Lift, Luxury Lift Hydraulic, Luxury Lift Traction, and RE. The Residential Elevators brand name appears on the light in the operating panel inside the elevator cab.

Young children can become entrapped in the space between the exterior landing (hoistway) door and the interior elevator car door or gate if there is a hazardous gap. When the elevator is called to another floor, a child trapped in this space risks being crushed or pinned, which could result in serious injury or death. Residential Elevators, Inc. is aware of one incident in which a child suffered a serious spinal injury due to entrapment.

Consumers should keep unsupervised young children away from the recalled elevators. Contact Residential Elevators, Inc. for instructions on how to measure for space guards to correct any hazardous gap. Space guards will be provided free of charge, and assistance with installation will be provided upon request.
