Custom Elevator is recalling residential elevators due to a hazardous gap between the exterior landing door and interior car door that can trap young children. One child died from entrapment in July 2021.

What this means for you

Highest-severity recall. Risk of serious injury or death is documented or strongly suspected. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.

Our severity reasoning: A reported death of a young child occurred in July 2021 due to entrapment in the recalled elevator. Per the severity rubric, the presence of known fatalities results in a Critical (score 5) classification.

Plain-English summary

Custom Elevator, of Plumsteadville, Pennsylvania, is recalling select residential elevators with hydraulic drives (HYD) or winding drum drives (WD). Young children can become entrapped in the space between the exterior landing (hoistway) door and the interior elevator car door or gate if there is a hazardous gap between the doors. When the elevator is called to another floor, the exterior door locks, trapping a child in the space between the doors and risking crushing, pinning, or death.

The recalled elevators were sold nationwide to elevator contractors from 2003 through August 2022, priced between $10,000 and $25,000, excluding installation costs. In July 2021, a 7-year-old child died in a vacation home in North Carolina after becoming entrapped in a residential elevator.

Consumers should keep young children away from the recalled elevators and contact Custom Elevator for instructions on how to measure for space guards to correct any hazardous gap. Space guards will be provided free of charge, and installation assistance is available upon request.
