ECHO and Shindaiwa Recall Backpack Blowers Due to Laceration Hazards

ECHO and Shindaiwa are recalling about 67,700 backpack blowers and 6,600 replacement straps because parts can be expelled, posing laceration and impact risks.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (laceration/impact) with one reported minor injury, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for products where injury has been reported but is not severe or fatal.

Plain-English summary

ECHO Inc. is recalling approximately 67,700 ECHO and Shindaiwa brand 2-cycle gas-powered commercial backpack blowers and 6,600 replacement shoulder straps. The recall involves specific models including the ECHO PB-8010H, PB-8010T, and Shindaiwa EB810, EB810RT, along with specific replacement strap part numbers. These products were sold between August 2018 and February 2020 at independent dealers and online retailers such as Home Depot and Grainger for approximately $600 for blowers and $30 for straps.

The hazard exists because the blower's shoulder straps, plastic buckles, or anti-static ground wire can be drawn into the blower fan and housing. This can cause plastic pieces to be expelled from the machine, posing laceration and impact hazards to the user. The firm has received 62 reports of incidents, including one minor injury where a consumer was hit in the neck by an expelled piece.

Consumers should immediately stop using the affected backpack blowers and return them to an authorized ECHO or Shindaiwa dealer for a free repair. Consumers can locate a dealer via the ECHO Store Locator or Shindaiwa Dealer Locator online, or contact ECHO at 800-432-3246 or Shindaiwa at 877-986-7783 for more information.
