SRAM Recalls Bicycle Gear Hubs Due to Brake Failure and Injury Hazards

SRAM is recalling i-Motion 3 internal gear hubs because the brakes can fail, posing crash and injury hazards to riders.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (one minor injury), but no deaths or serious injuries are documented, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

SRAM is recalling approximately 7,000 i-Motion 3 three-speed internal gear hubs with a coaster brake. These hubs were installed on specific Electra bicycles, including the Cruiser Custom 3i, Coaster 3i, Hawaii 3i, Hawaii 3i 24, and Straight 8 models, and were also sold as aftermarket parts for other bicycles. The recalled hubs were sold nationwide from April 2010 through December 2018. An additional 700 units were sold in Canada.

The recall is being issued because the brakes in the gear hubs can fail, which poses crash and injury hazards to the rider. SRAM has received five reports of brake failure, resulting in one minor injury to a rider. The recalled hubs have "SRAM i-Motion 3" printed on the hub shell and a brake arm extending from the axle.

Consumers should immediately stop using bicycles with the recalled gear hubs. They should contact SRAM at 800-346-2928 or visit www.sram.com or www.zipp.com to click on “Recall Notice” for instructions on how to receive a partial refund.
