SRAM 12-Speed Shift Brake Levers Recalled Due to Crash Hazard
SRAM is recalling about 61,300 12-speed shift brake levers because the clamp bolt can come loose, preventing proper braking and posing a crash hazard to riders. No injuries have been reported.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (brake failure leading to crashes) where no injuries have yet been reported. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products without reported injury are scored at High (3), as the hazard is serious but theoretical.
Plain-English summary
SRAM LLC is recalling all SRAM 12-speed shift brake levers sold separately as upgrade or replacement kits. The recalled levers have black hoods and were distributed by NordicTrack.com, Amazon.com, and DicksSportingGoods.com from January 2022 through November 2023, priced between $500 and $600. Approximately 61,300 units were sold in the United States, and about 2,940 were sold in Canada.
The brake lever clamp bolt can come loose, which prevents the rider from properly operating the braking system. Because riders depend on brake levers to slow or stop the bicycle, a loose clamp bolt creates a crash hazard. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled shift brake levers and inspect them for tightness. If a shift brake lever rotates or is loose, SRAM will offer a free brake installation inspection at an authorized retailer. If the inspection confirms the clamp bolt assembly is loose, it will be tightened or replaced at no cost to the consumer.
