Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling Hill Topper Electric Bike motor controller circuit boards, including 24V/250W and 36V/350W models. These components were sold separately and as part of electric bike kits used to convert regular bicycles into electric ones. The recall involves approximately 3,350 units.
The hazard exists because water can enter the motor controller, causing it to accelerate without rider input. This malfunction can cause the rider to lose control of the bike, posing a crash and injury hazard. The firm has received six reports of riders losing control, including one report of a rider sustaining scrapes and bruises.
The affected motor controllers were sold at Hill Topper's Seattle store and online at www.electric-bike-kit.com from January 2017 through June 2018. Prices ranged from $50 to $60 for the controllers alone and $500 to $800 when sold with kits. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled motor controller circuit boards and kits and contact the firm for a free replacement.
