What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of fire and explosion from overheating lithium-ion batteries, which fits the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'
Plain-English summary
Yuka Clothing, of Miami, Fla., is recalling about 800 self-balancing scooters, commonly referred to as hoverboards, due to a fire hazard. The recalled products include Wheeli, 2 Wheelz, Back to the Future, Mobile Tech, Hover Shark, NWS, X Glider, and X Rider brands. These hoverboards feature two wheels at either end of a platform, are powered by lithium-ion battery packs, and were sold with a key fob used to turn the device on and off. The products were sold in various colors and do not have brand labels on them.
The lithium-ion battery packs in the recalled self-balancing scooters can overheat, posing a risk of the products smoking, catching fire, and/or exploding. There have been two incident reports involving the recalled products: one involved a hoverboard sparking, and the second involved a hoverboard turning off while a consumer was riding it. No injuries or property damage have been reported.
The recalled hoverboards were sold by Yuka Clothing stores nationwide and online through choxi.com, groupon.com, Starshop.com, and zulily.com from June 2015 through May 2016 for between $400 and $900. Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled products and contact Yuka Clothing at 800-616-0765 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or by email at [email protected], to return their hoverboard for a full refund.
