PTX Performance Products USA, of Irvine, Calif., is recalling about 4,900 Airwalk brand self-balancing scooters, commonly referred to as hoverboards. The recalled products have two wheels at either end of a platform and are powered by lithium-ion battery packs. They were sold in black or white colors with the AIRWALK logo printed on the front right foot pad.
The lithium-ion battery packs in these self-balancing scooters can overheat, posing a risk of the products smoking, catching fire, and/or exploding. No injuries have been reported.
The hoverboards were sold at The Sports Authority, MC Sports stores nationwide, and online at Academy.com and DICKS.com from December 2015 through May 2016 for about $500. The firm is no longer in business, and the remedy is no longer available.
