Black Diamond Inc. is recalling approximately 3,000 Whippet and Carbon Whippet ski poles manufactured between May 2013 and January 2014. The recall involves the stainless steel pick located in the handgrip, which can break and fail to slow or stop users from sliding downhill on snow or ice-covered slopes. The affected Whippet poles are gray with two telescoping shafts, while the Carbon Whippet poles are black with three telescoping shafts. Both models feature a black and orange rubber handgrip with a built-in stainless steel serrated pick. Recalled poles have picks with polished surfaces, a notch in the top of the pick, and a five-digit date code etched on the pole between 13121 and 14015. The date code is located underneath the locking mechanism on the lower shaft of the Whippet and the middle shaft of the Carbon Whippet.
These poles were sold individually at major outdoor retailers globally from January 2014 to November 2014 for approximately $100 for the Whippet and $140 for the Carbon Whippet. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ski poles and contact Black Diamond to receive a free replacement for the upper shaft.
