Adobe Recalls High-Powered Magnets Distributed in Promotional Materials Package

Adobe is recalling high-powered magnets distributed in a promotional package due to the risk of serious internal injury if swallowed by children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (high-powered magnets) where injury has not yet been reported for this specific product, but the hazard is severe (potential death) and similar products have caused injuries.

Plain-English summary

Adobe is recalling high-powered magnets that were distributed nationwide in November 2012 as part of an Adobe Connect promotional materials package. The recall involves approximately 500 sets of spherical silver magnets, each about 5 millimeters in diameter, which were affixed to a laminated green cardboard sheet inside a green box with a black lid.

The magnets pose a serious health risk if two or more are swallowed, as they can link together inside a child's intestines and clamp onto body tissues. This can cause intestinal obstructions, perforations, sepsis, and death. While Adobe has not received reports of incidents or injuries involving these specific magnets, the CPSC has received 80 reports of incidents involving the ingestion of other high-powered magnets, resulting in 79 reports seeking medical intervention.

Consumers should immediately stop using the magnets and either discard them or contact Adobe for instructions on returning them. Adobe can be reached at (503) 382-8500 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, ET, or online at www.adobe.com by clicking on "blog" for more information.
