What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect that can cause a fall hazard resulting in injury, which aligns with the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has been reported but is not classified as severe or critical by the agency.
Plain-English summary
BCI Burke Co. LLC is recalling approximately 250 Arch Swing Sets built with 2 3/8 inch steel tubing. The recall involves end and middle arch supports, as well as added bays with belt or bucket seats. The product was sold by BCI Burke Co. and its distributors from January 2004 through December 2011 for between $700 and $1,000.
The recall is due to a fall hazard. The welded connection of the sleeve joint to the arch support can crack or break. If this occurs, the top swing beam can collapse, causing children on the swings to fall and be injured. The firm has received seven reports of incidents involving the recalled swing sets, including two minor injuries.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled swing sets, remove the chain and swings, and contact the firm for a free retrofit kit. BCI Burke is contacting owners directly by mail. For additional information, consumers can contact the firm at (800) 356-2070 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, visit www.bciburke.com, or email [email protected].
