Louis Hornick Dublin Roman Shades Recalled Due to Strangulation Risk

Louis Hornick & Co. is recalling Dublin Energy Solution Roman Shades sold at Bed Bath & Beyond because exposed inner cords pose a strangulation hazard to children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (strangulation hazard) where injury has not yet been reported as permanent or severe, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for theoretical or non-permanent injury risks.

Plain-English summary

Louis Hornick & Co. Inc. is recalling approximately 364,000 Dublin Energy Solution Roman Shades. These shades were sold exclusively at Bed Bath & Beyond stores and online from August 2007 through September 2009 for between $40 and $130. The recall includes all sizes and colors, including navy, chocolate, khaki, and cream, that feature exposed inner cords on the back of the shade.

The recall was prompted by two reports of children becoming entangled in the exposed inner cords. In July 2008, a 20-month-old boy in a crib became entangled, leaving a red mark on his neck. In April 2009, a 3-year-old boy was found with a cord mark running ear to ear on his neck after becoming entangled. No permanent injuries were sustained in these incidents. The hazard exists because children can place their necks between the exposed inner cord and the fabric or pull the cord out and wrap it around their necks.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Roman shades. They should contact Louis Hornick & Company to receive a free repair kit, which will be available by the end of November.
