The recall is prompted by a strangulation hazard. For the Roman shades, the hazard occurs when a child places their neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the shade, or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around their neck. For the roller shades, the hazard exists if the looped cord is not attached to the wall with the provided tension device, allowing a child's neck to become entangled in the free-standing loop. In June 2009, a three-year-old boy became entangled in the inner cord of a Roman shade while standing on his bed; the fabric liner covering the inner cords had detached. The child recovered from a thin laceration around his neck. There have been no reported injuries associated with the roller shades.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Roman shades and contact Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, or PBteen to receive a free repair kit. For the roller shades, consumers should immediately check to ensure the tension device is attached to the looped cord and installed into the wall. If the tension device is not attached, consumers should secure it to the wall immediately. If the tension device is missing, consumers should stop using the roller shades and contact Pottery Barn to receive a replacement.
