What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injuries have been reported (bruises, broken toes/fingers, strains), fitting the 'High' severity criteria for injury reports without fatalities or severe structural vehicle defects.
Plain-English summary
Viking Range Corporation is recalling approximately 45,326 built-in side-by-side refrigerator/freezers and refrigerators with bottom freezers. The recall involves specific 48-inch wide side-by-side models and 36-inch wide bottom-freezer models manufactured between July 1999 and April 2006. These units were sold at appliance and specialty retailers nationwide for between $4,725 and $6,400. The 42-inch wide or freestanding refrigerators are not included in this recall.
The hazard exists because the refrigerator doors can detach, which poses an injury risk to consumers. Viking has received about 57 reports of doors detaching, including four reports of injuries involving bruises, broken toes/fingers, and strains. Additionally, several incidents of minor damage to floors and counters have been reported.
Consumers with recalled refrigerators should contact Viking immediately to schedule a free in-home repair. If the door is not sealing properly, is sagging, or fails to open and close properly, consumers should immediately stop using the refrigerator. If the door is functioning properly, consumers may continue to use the refrigerator until it has been repaired.
