Petzl S.A. is recalling approximately 322,000 MYO and MYO Belt headlamps sold in the United States. The recall involves specific models including the MYO, MYO 3, MYO 5, MYO Belt 3, MYO Belt 5, MYOLITE, MYOLITE 3, MYOBELT SB5, MYO XP, and MYO XP BELT. These products were sold at specialty retailers nationwide from February 2003 through August 2008 for between $40 and $80.
The hazard exists when the headlamps are used with rechargeable batteries. In these cases, the cable connecting the battery pack to the lamp can spark, melt, or catch fire, which poses a burn hazard to consumers. Petzl has received 13 reports of sparking and/or melting, with 2 reports of flames. One consumer received a minor burn to the hand, and another experienced singed hair.
Consumers should immediately stop using rechargeable batteries with the headlamps. They should contact Petzl to obtain a new warning label. Consumers can continue to use the headlamps with non-rechargeable batteries.
