Jardine Wooden Cribs Recalled for Entrapment and Strangulation Hazards

Jardine Enterprises is recalling approximately 320,000 wooden cribs in various styles and finishes. The recall was initiated because the wooden crib slats and spindles can break, creating a gap that poses an entrapment and strangulation hazard to infants. The affected cribs were sold at KidsWorld, Geoffrey Stores, Toys "R" Us, and Babies "R" Us stores nationwide, as well as at babiesrus.com, from January 2002 through May 2008. Prices ranged from $150 to $300, with one specific model, the 0309K00 Mahogany Positano Lifetime Crib, selling for $450.
The CPSC has reported 42 incidents of crib slats and spindles breaking. In four of these incidents, children became entrapped in the space created by a broken slat or spindle. Two of the entrapped children sustained abrasions and bruising. The model number for the affected cribs is printed on the inside of the bottom rail of the headboard or footboard.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and contact Jardine to receive a credit towards the purchase of a new Jardine crib. In the meantime, parents are urged to find an alternative, safe sleep environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard, or toddler bed, depending on the child's age.
