Laars Heating Systems Co. is recalling approximately 2,100 Laars 9600 CB Condensing Heating Boilers and Laars 9600 HWG Condensing Water Heaters. The recall involves units with black vent pipe or tubing. The affected boilers are used to generate hot water for heating systems, while the water heaters generate hot water for household use. The recalled units feature "Mark II" and "9600 CB" or "9600 HWG" printed on the front, with model numbers and BTU sizes on the right side. The exteriors are putty and black or taupe and black. Specific models included are CB 150, CB 175, CB 200, HWG 150, HWG 175, and HWG 200.

The hazard exists because internal black plastic venting components in these units can crack and leak flue gases, including carbon monoxide (CO), which poses a risk of CO poisoning. Laars has received three reports of cracked vent components, but no injuries have been reported.

These products were sold through plumbing and heating wholesalers and representatives nationwide from November 1998 through February 2007 for between $6,500 and $7,300. Consumers should contact Laars Heating Systems to help determine if their boiler or water heater needs to be shut off immediately and to schedule a free repair.
