What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (swallowable magnets causing intestinal perforation) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Mattel Inc. is recalling Barbie and Tanner™ play sets, model numbers J9472 and J9560, due to a safety hazard involving the "scooper" accessory. The recalled scoopers feature a visible, silver-colored, disc-shaped magnet on the end that can come loose. Scoopers with a white material covering the magnet and products manufactured after January 31, 2007, are not included in this recall.

The hazard exists because young children may swallow or aspirate the loose magnets. If more than one magnet is swallowed, they can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal. Mattel has received three reports of magnets coming loose, but no injuries have been reported.

Approximately 683,000 units were sold at toy stores and various other retailers nationwide from May 2006 to August 2007 for about $16. Consumers should immediately take the recalled toys away from children and contact Mattel to receive a free replacement toy. For additional information, consumers can call Mattel toll-free at (888) 597-6597 or visit www.service.mattel.com.
