Plain-English summary
Mattel Inc. is recalling approximately 2.4 million Polly Pocket magnetic play sets, including specific models such as the Polly Place Hangin' Out House and Treetop Clubhouse. These toys contain small magnets embedded in the hands, feet, and accessories of the dolls. The magnets can fall out undetected by parents or caregivers, posing a risk if swallowed, aspirated, or placed in a child's nose or ears.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware of 170 reports of magnets coming out of these toys. Three reports of serious injuries were documented, involving children who swallowed more than one magnet. In all three cases, the magnets attracted each other, causing intestinal perforations that required surgery. The affected children were hospitalized for seven, 12, and an unspecified number of days.
The recalled play sets were sold at discount department stores and toy stores from May 2003 through September 2006 for between $15 and $30. Consumers should immediately take these toys away from children and contact Mattel to arrange for a return and receive a voucher for a replacement toy. Mattel can be reached at (888) 597-6597 or via their website at www.service.mattel.com.
