What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the pedal can detach, and the source explicitly reports eight incidents resulting in minor injuries, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for injury reports without fatalities or hospitalizations.
Plain-English summary
Time Sport International/ATAC 2001 Inc. is recalling approximately 18,000 Time RXS Titan Carbon, RXS Carbon, RXS, and RXE bicycle pedals. The recall was initiated because the pedal's bearing cap can fail, which may cause the pedal to come off the bicycle while in use. This defect poses a fall hazard for riders.
The recalled pedals are black or gray and are made of composite material. They are mounted to a steel or titanium pedal axle and bearing unit using a threaded aluminum bearing cap. Pedals that have a gold dot on the underside of the pedal body, just inside where the bearing cap is mounted, are not included in this recall. The company has received reports of eight incidents where the pedal came off the bicycle, resulting in minor injuries.
These pedals were sold at bicycle stores, via mail order, and through online bicycle dealers nationwide from October 2004 through August 2006 for between $75 and $300. Consumers should stop using the recalled pedals immediately and contact Time Sport International to arrange for an inspection and, if necessary, a free repair.
