Aqua Scout Recalls Water Scooters Due to Battery Ejection Risk
Aqua Scout is recalling water scooters because hydrogen gas buildup can force the battery cover to eject, posing an injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where minor injuries (lacerations and bruising) have been reported, but no serious injuries or fatalities are noted, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for reported minor harm without escalation to severe injury.
Plain-English summary
Aqua Scout, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is recalling approximately 475 Aqua Scout Water Scooters. The recall is due to a hazard where hydrogen gas can build up in the battery compartment, causing the battery cover and battery package to forcefully expel from the product. This ejection poses a risk of injury to the user or bystanders.
The recalled product is a hand-held, battery-powered device used to propel swimmers through the water. It features a yellow or red plastic enclosure with a black plastic handle and propeller. There are no model numbers or brand names written on the scooter. Aqua Scout has received five reports of the battery cover and/or battery package being expelled, including two reports of minor injuries such as lacerations and bruising.
The scooters were sold online at the Aqua Scout website and through eBay from May 2005 through July 2005 for approximately $120. Consumers should stop using the recalled water scooter immediately and return it to Aqua Scout for a free replacement. Consumers have been contacted directly by Aqua Scout. For additional information, consumers can contact Aqua Scout via e-mail at [email protected], by telephone at (315) 343-0369 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the Aqua Scout website at www.aquascout.us.
