CSK Auto is recalling Aqua Water Scooters because hydrogen gas buildup can cause the battery to forcefully eject, posing an injury risk to users.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (facial lacerations and bruising), but no fatalities or severe injuries are documented, fitting the 'High' severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
CSK Auto Inc. is recalling approximately 2,200 Aqua Water Scooters due to a safety hazard involving the battery compartment. The product is a hand-held, battery-powered device used to propel swimmers through the water. It features a yellow or red plastic enclosure, a black plastic handle and propeller, and a shark face on the front.
The recall is necessary because hydrogen gas can build up in the battery compartment, causing the battery cover and battery package to forcefully expel from the product. This poses a risk of injury to the user or bystanders. CSK Auto has received nine reports of the battery cover and/or battery package being expelled, including three reports of facial injuries such as lacerations and bruising.
The recalled water scooters were sold at Checker Auto Parts and Kragen Auto Parts stores in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Minnesota, as well as on the company's website, from April 2005 to June 2005 for approximately $99. Consumers should stop using the recalled water scooter immediately and return it to the store where purchased for a full refund. For additional information, consumers can contact CSK Auto at (800) 842-3070 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, or visit www.cskauto.com.
