What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the seat may break, causing loss of control and falls. Although one mild injury was reported, the hazard description explicitly notes the potential for serious injury, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products.

Plain-English summary

Selle Royal/fi'zi:k, of Pozzoleone, Italy, is recalling about 257 Selle Royal/fi'zi:k [cp] pavé bicycle seats, part number 7403SXS 03 9072, with a manufacture date of 10/03. These seats were installed as original equipment on 2004 model year Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) brand Novara Express bicycles. The affected seats feature a clear plastic base with "fi'zi:k", "made in Italy", and a date code dial printed on the base.

The recall is due to a hazard where the plastic scuff guard underneath the front of the seat, which secures the seat rails, may crack or break. This failure can cause the rider to lose control and/or fall, resulting in serious injury. There have been three reports of the seat breaking and one report of an injury, in which the rider sustained a mild concussion.

The affected bicycles were sold at REI stores nationwide from March 2004 through September 2004 for about $900. Consumers should stop using the bicycle immediately and contact their local REI stores for a replacement seat at no cost. For more information, consumers can contact REI toll-free at (800) 426-4840 between 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. PT, Monday through Sunday.
