BikeE Recalls Recumbent Bicycles Due to Seat Cracking and Breakage

BikeE Corp. is recalling approximately 13,500 recumbent bicycles because the seats can crack and break, causing the seat to detach from the frame and injure the rider.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect where the seat can break and detach, resulting in a reported injury that included a broken leg, which meets the criteria for significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

BikeE Corp. of Corvallis, Oregon, is recalling approximately 13,500 recumbent bicycles. The recall includes all 1999 through 2001 model BikeE bicycles with 27-inch-tall seat backs, silver-colored seat frames, and black mesh seat backs. The word "BikeE" is written on the frame of these bicycles. Recumbent BikeE bicycles with seat backs lower than 27 inches are not included in this recall. Seats with silver-colored rings around the black plastic clamps that attach the seat to the frame have been repaired or are not part of the recall.

The recumbent seats on these bicycles can crack and break, causing the seat to come off the frame and resulting in injury to the rider. BikeE Corp. has received two reports of seats on these bicycles breaking while riding, resulting in one injury that included a broken leg.

BikeE authorized dealers nationwide sold the recalled recumbent bicycles from February 1999 through February 2002 for between $550 and $2,150. Consumers should stop using these bicycles immediately. Because the firm is no longer involved with this recall, consumers can take a recalled bicycle to the dealer from which it was purchased, but it is up to the dealer as to whether the repair can be performed and whether there is a charge. The firm, BikeE, is out of business and cannot be contacted. For further information, consumers may call CPSC's toll-free Hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054).
