Plain-English summary
BikeE Corp. is recalling approximately 700 recumbent tandem bicycles manufactured in 2000 and 2001. The recall is due to a defect where the steerer tube on the front forks can separate. This failure can cause the rider to lose control of the bicycle, resulting in a fall and possible serious injuries.
The recalled bicycles have two handlebars and two seats in a lowered, horizontal riding position. The name "BikeE" appears on both sides of the main frame. Serial numbers for the E2 models are located on the bottom of the frame, between the foot crank and front wheel, and appear as BX000000X or T00000. BikeE authorized dealers sold these bicycles for about $2,200 from March 2000 through October 2001.
BikeE Corp. has received three reports of steerer tubes beginning to separate, but no injuries to riders have occurred. Because the manufacturer is out of business, consumers should stop using these bicycles immediately. Consumers can take the recalled bicycle to the dealer from which it was purchased, though the dealer determines whether the repair will be performed and if there is a charge. For more information, consumers can call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772.
