Stile Products Recalls Tern Folding Bicycles Due to Frame Crack Hazard
Stile Products is recalling specific Tern folding bicycles because the frame can crack at the hinge, posing a fall hazard. No U.S. injuries have been reported.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (frame cracking) that poses a fall hazard. While no U.S. injuries were reported, the potential for serious injury from a fall due to a structural failure places this in the 'High' category per the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported in the U.S.
Plain-English summary
Stile Products Inc. is recalling certain Tern brand adult folding bicycles, including the Link Uno, Link D7i, Link D8, Link P9, Link P7i, and Link P24h models. The recall is due to a defect where the bike's frame can crack at the hinge on the top tube, which poses a fall hazard to the rider.
Approximately 650 units were sold in the U.S. and about 20 in Canada between November 2011 and April 2014 at authorized Stile/Tern dealers for between $600 and $1250. The recalled bicycles have a 10-character alphanumeric serial number stamped on the bottom bracket shell that begins with AI1133 through AI1137 or AI1149 through AI1213. The firm has received 11 reports of frame cracking, including five reports of minor scrapes and bruises from outside the U.S., but no incidents or injuries have been reported in the U.S.
Consumers should immediately stop using the bicycles and contact Stile Products or take the bike to an authorized dealer. Consumers will receive a free replacement frame and have it installed at no cost, or they can upgrade their bike to one of three designated models at an additional cost. For more information, consumers can call Stile Products toll-free at (888) 570-8376 or visit www.ternbicycles.com.
