What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves significant injury reports, including third-degree burns, and a risk of fire, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports.
Plain-English summary
BJ's Wholesale Club is recalling approximately 2,800 Red Devil gas grills sold from May 2000 through June 2002. The grills were manufactured by e4L Inc., Quantum North America Inc., and Cadac, and were sold for $70. These red metal grills feature a tripod stand and a logo depicting a devil cooking at a grill.
The recall is due to a design defect that allows consumers to light the grill at an air intake tube rather than the burner. This causes gas inside the tube to ignite, reaching temperatures up to 750 degrees Fahrenheit. In grills manufactured before August 1998, this heat damaged the plastic support piece, causing the grill to collapse. When the grill falls, flames can burn nearby consumers and ignite surrounding combustibles.
More than 1,000 consumers returned grills to the manufacturer due to collapse. Other retailers reported 44 incidents of consumers suffering burns to legs, hands, and fingers, including some third-degree burns, after the grills collapsed. No incidents have been reported by BJ's Wholesale Club customers. Consumers should stop using these grills immediately and return them to a local BJ's Wholesale Club for a refund.
